Isn't it crazy how
siblings are almost like two strangers living in a home
The first few years
You all have different friends
If you're far apart in age,
you are achieving different milestones
and priorities?
Choosing a Halloween costume vs. choosing a university.

As you grow older,
your siblings become your best friends
You all know what ticks your parents off,
and how to cover each other if one of you messes up.
You have seen each other in the most vulnerable times,
sick with food poisoning and unwashed hair for days
or a broken heart even a pint of Ben & Jerry's can't fix.

If you're the oldest,
you cannot believe how much your siblings have looked up to you
since the day they were born.
Even when you had a mouth full of metal and pet caterpillars for eyebrows.
They thought you were one of the coolest people to walk this planet.
and no, they never told you that.

Today is Christmas.
Whether you celebrate it or not, sit next to your brother or sister on the couch or dining table.
When they least expect it,
give them the biggest smile you've got.
Don't say anything, just smile.
Smile SO big at them they start to worry,
Oh god, she's already drunk. 

Before you go to bed tonight,
Know that these aliens that once came into the world,
And tried to steal your parents' attention
are your life-long friends.

They will be with you through losses,
the most beautiful and precious miracles,
and the craziest dilemmas you'd never be able to survive
Without them.
